2) Sachin Tendulkar (Batting average 53.78) The name many expect at the top here is third in consistency (after Gavaskar and Dravid), Runs Tally Impact and Partnership-Building Impact (both after Dravid and Gavaskar). He is second when it comes to series-defining performances (SDs), two less than Dravid in 37 more Tests, and half of those were in support roles. Despite a poor phase between 2005 and 2007, he came back spectacularly as the highest impact batsman in the world between 2008-early 2011, the highest impact phase of his career (despite the more spectacular phase between 1996 and 2000). At the time of the 2011 World Cup, Tendulkar and Dravid had almost the same impact as batsmen. Thereafter, Dravid was the highest impact Indian batsman till he retired in 2012, and Tendulkar was the lowest impact specialist Indian batsman, till he retired in 2013 – this separated them quite emphatically, for posterity.
I would at any time pick Laxam ahead of Hazare. Also my captain would be Gavaskar rather than Kumble because Kumble is not a guarantee for away tests. Gavaskar was only defensive because of India's strength at that time. In addition to always being shrewd, he showed on several occasions that he can be aggressive too. Remeber World Chmpnshp 85, Melbourne 81. My 12th man would be Zaheer, he would replace Prasanna/Kumble in tests where pitches are conducive to seam bowling. Also my keeper would be Kirmani though I must admit that it will be a tight race between him & Dhoni. What works in favor of Kirmani though is his excellant glovework for both pace & spin alike & his longevity without any injuries. Remember this is a specialist position & batting should not be the criteria as batting in this line up is immensely strong with 2 alrounders (Kapil & Mankad) backing up Sunny, Shewag, Dravid, Sachin & Laxman. Finally Mohinder, Gupte/Chandra, Dhoni-bkup WK & Amar Singh would complete my 16.
It is hard to find anyone who hasn’t heard the name of this legendary player. Sachin Tendulkar who is affectionately called Little Master by his fans is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. The 39-year-old Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989 and still continue playing cricket. In his twenty-two years of cricket career, he has achieved many records in both Test and one-day international cricket. He is the highest run scorer and highest centurion in both format of the cricket game. So far he has scored 15470 runs in Test and 18426 runs in ODI respectively. He is the only player to reach the milestone of scoring a hundred centuries, including 51 centuries in Test and 49 centuries in ODI. He is also the only player to score fifty centuries in Test cricket. He is the first player to have scored double century in ODI cricket. He is also the first player to cross 10000 runs in one day cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar is the youngest debutant at the age of 16 years and 238 days and Farokh Engineer is the oldest debutant at the age of 36 years and 138 days. Anil Kumble is the leading wicket taker with 337 wickets to his name, and Sachin Tendulkar is the leading run scorer with 18426 runs to his name from 452 innings at an average of 44.83. Currently, Tendulkar holds the record for playing the most number of ODI matches with 463. He also holds the world record for maximum number of Man of the Match titles. In ODIs, 418/5 is the highest runs scored by India in an innings. India's lowest total in an innings while batting is 54 runs. Currently, Rohit Sharma's score of 264 against Sri Lanka in November 2014 is the highest number of runs scored by any player in an ODI.
The biggest miss on the list is GR Visvanath, who has won India far matches than many who have scored far more run than him. The Indian Eleven, would be far poorer in his absence.

VVS Laxman is in fairly good form of late. Batting lower down the order, the right-hander invariably comes up with match-saving, or match-winning, innings. He is rightly referred to as the 'Very Very Special' player.
Top 10 Most popular cricketers all time. These cricket players having great fame in all formats of cricket Test, ODI and T20 in all categories batting, bowling and fielding.
@Bamrolls: I do not dislike Kumble. But no way he gets ahead of any of the quartet. Being long in the tooth, I have seen 9 of this 11 in action at test and 1st class levels. Prasanna said Kumble would struggle to find a place in the 70s and I agree. Chandras record is more impressive because in those days there were few tests in a year, no one dayers, no coaches etc. One had to maintain form for a year without playing a test. It is easier if you are playing matches 12 months/year. Also the biggest fielding disaster was Prasanna with the physique of a sumo wrestler. There were also characters like P. Sharma and Kanitkar with plenty of blubber. Edges to 3rd man fetched two runs easily. Vishy was ok close in. Chandra was decent in the outfield by comparison. My educated guess is that we can subtract a couple of runs from the bowling averages of the 70s when comparing with the current era of bowlers. Anyway, I was pointing out that Menon's conclusion was wrong and based on sentimentality.
Accept everything except MSD here. It's a stupid joke that he is here. I can't remember any instance when (a) he went into bat when the going is tough, let alone score (when the going is good, he just runs in) and (b) he is acclaimed for his keeping abilities (even Kamran Akmal is sometimes praised for his keeping). As a captain, he got rid of senior players from ODI team, and has never shown any interest in picking the best team for the present or in building a team for the future. It's his luck that he is in the Indian team, luckier that he is the captain, and even more ridiculously lucky that he is in all time India's greats. All others in the greats' list influenced how the game is played in India and showed their utmost commitment to the game. Dhoni never has and never will. I am ashamed to be an Indian when my fellow Indians select him into the greats list. I am sorry for my outburst but I am truly disgusted.
@Beertjie: I know what you are talking abt and i will have to say i Agree, thats obviously true that this XI will loose against Aus or WI all time XI (maybe to Eng and Pak XI as well). But what i wanted to say or actually felt bad was that players like Sunny and Dravid deserve more respect than given in that comment by Navillus. I agree Lillee, Warnie, Macgrath or Miller wud be nightmare to face but you still cannot say that Dravid and Sunny in their prime will fail everytime to these greats. Sachin, Sunny and Dravid have score against all top bowlers and in all tough conditions winning matches for India. Everyone knows that we are no.1 in test because of our batting. If a team's batting alone can make such a diff then there has to be something special abt it. In an Era when WI dominated, Sunny was the best against them, in 1990s when there were some of the all time Great Bowlers around Sachin topped the averages for the whole decade and who has won more matches for us than 'The Wall'?
Jadeja’s stunning performance, which included 7-48 in the second innings as India won by an innings and 75 runs, catapulted him over four players in the rankings to sit just eight ranking points shy of Aswhin, who remains the world’s No.1 Test bowler.
We welcome suggested improvements to any of our articles. You can make it easier for us to review and, hopefully, publish your contribution by keeping a few points in mind.
Sadagoppan Ramesh played just 19 Tests, in which he had 2 SDs, including one against Pakistan (60 and 96 in a series-levelling game remembered solely now for Anil Kumble’s 10 wickets in an innings). Nothing, including his low failure rate of 37%, justified his being discarded so early in his career.
Ben Stokes described the moment he became the highest paid England cricketer of all time as “complete carnage”, having learned of his £1.7m deal to play for Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League during the early hours of yesterday morning via social media. But even the all-rounder’s surprise could not match that of the Sussex left-arm fast bowler, Tymal Mills, who from a reserve price of £60,000 finished up with a £1.4m deal to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore, some two years after he nearly quit the game. With Eoin Morgan, Chris Woakes, Jason Roy and Chris Jordan also picking up contracts, it felt like a watershed moment for English cricketers in the auction and reflected the growing acceptance of the world’s most lucrative Twenty20 league by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Reborn Tymal Mills’s Twenty20 vision offers a glimpse into modern cricket Read more Stokes, 25, had gone into the auction widely tipped to be signed up and found himself the subject of a bidding war between five of the eight franchises. Pune, last year’s bottom-ranked side, secured his services for 14.5 crore rupees (£1.7m) ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad for seven times his starting price. The Durham all-rounder thus became the highest paid overseas player in the IPL and the second biggest IPL auction sale after the £1.9m deal for India’s Yuvraj Singh two years ago. Given the deal is roughly twice that of his combined international central contracts, Stokes will earn more than any England cricketer before him. “It’s a life changing amount of money,” said Stokes, who waited 40 minutes to go under the auctioneer’s hammer after setting his alarm for 3.30am. “I was following on Twitter, I didn’t actually see the auction live. I kept on refreshing. I saw people were tweeting and then I realised that Pune had got me. I wasn’t sure how much a crore was. It was complete carnage.” The seven-figure sum collected by Mills was arguably the more staggering, however, not least because he has won only four caps and came close to retiring in 2014 owing to the congenital back condition that has since forced him become a specialist Twenty20 player. Speaking from the United Arab Emirates, where he is playing in the Pakistan Super League, the 24-year-old said: “I was the lowest of the base prices because I just wanted to get picked up by a team. When my name came up I was nervous, giddy and jumpy. The bidding was quite slow but once it hit 10 crore I knew it was big money – but it kept going. “When it finished I did not know how much it was worth. When I worked it out I could not believe it, it did not seem real. It’s an amount of money that can change your life. It will for me.” Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, who secured £1.2m IPL deals in 2009, are the only English cricketers to have previously drawn such eye-watering numbers. The 2017 IPL's top-paid cricketers The 2017 IPL’s top-paid cricketers. But the deals did not stop at Stokes and Mills, with Woakes signing for Kolkata Knightriders for £500,000, the one-day captain Morgan joining Kings XI Punjab for £240,000, Roy going to Gujarat Lions for £120,000 and Chris Jordan earning £60,000 at defending champions Hyderabad. Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales, however, went unsold. It means there will be eight England internationals in this year’s IPL – Jos Buttler and Sam Billings already have deals from last year at Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils respectively – although only Mills may be available to play for the entire tournament, which runs from 5 April through to the final in Hyderabad on 21 May. With the Champions Trophy being held in England this summer, Morgan, as one-day captain, will likely be asked to return after four weeks in time for the one-day series with Ireland that starts on 5 May. The remaining six are expected to have until 14 May but will still miss the final week as they are expected to attend a training camp in Spain. IPL salaries are listed for the full duration of the seven-week league and they will therefore receive a pro-rata amount based on the number of games they can play. There are obliged payments back to the English county system too and in the case of Stokes this will see him docked 0.5% of his central contract for every day he is away, or around £140,000 overall. Away from the English recruitment, perhaps the biggest breakthrough came with deals for Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan, who became the first from Afghanistan to sign for IPL teams. Both will play for Hyderabad, with Rashid, an 18-year-old leg-spinner, earning £480,000 and with Nabi, an off-spinning all-rounder, £36,000. Other big overseas earners in the auction were the South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada (£600,000, Delhi), the New Zealand left-armer Trent Boult (£600,000, Kolkata) and Australia’s right-arm quick Pat Cummins (£550,000, Delhi). With 2017 the final IPL season before every player is put back into the auction next year, only 66 “lots” were sold this time. Karn Sharma, a leg-spinner, secured the highest price for an Indian cricketer with a £380,000 contract at Mumbai. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma, who featured in the 4-0 Test series victory over England in December, went unsold. Cricketwatchdogs IPL salaries are listed for the full duration of the seven-week league and they will therefore receive a pro-rata amount based on the number of games they can play. Not a great team. Forget the recent hype, but Dhoni has no business being there. Kirmani is the best keeper. Sehwag has got the runs, but he is not the purist's delight. I will stay with Vijay Merchant, whose flowing drives along the carpet, on both sides of the wicket, must have delighted many a cricket lover. It was a toss up between Rahul Dravid and Polly Umrigar. I gave it to Umrigar, for being a great batsman, who bowled a bit. He bowled in tandem with Jasu Patel at Kanpur, against the Aussies and won us a game. Hazare was a surprise. I would stick to Vishwanath. Those wristy drives, were pure class. Vintage stuff. I have not seen Nissar, but I have read extensively about him. He is the best India has produced, and he just has to be there, although I am an admirer of Srinath too. Kumble has been a great bowler, throughout his career - but Subhash Gupte was in a class of his own. I endorse the rest of the selection. Cheers. https://www.cricketwatchdogs.com/2017/06/15/pakistan-beat-england-now-battle-cricket-matches-india-vs-pakistan/ With this magnitude of spin, the ball’s trajectory is much straighter and results in many wickets as the opposing batsman often plays down the wrong line of trajectory. As a result, Ashwin, who is one of the very few operators of this delivery in the world game, has one of the highest percentages of dismissals for leg before wicket in Test cricket to date.
Sports India has the best Blind Cricket Team in the world, but the players are languishing without jobs Some of them are living in near-penury. If you are a true cricket fan, you might want to help them. Devanik Saha Follow @devanikindia Wednesday, February 10, 2016 - 12:25 Share @Whatsapp Share @Facebook Share @twitter Share @Email Share @google+ Share @reddit Earlier this month, the Indian cricket team made history by becoming the first team in 140 years to win against an Australian team in a bilateral series with three or more matches. With this spectacular performance, India has moved to Number 1 in the T20 ICC rankings. However, another cricket team from India, which has been performing astonishingly well but hasn’t got much recognition and attention, is India’s blind cricket team. In 2014, India won the Blind World Cup, when it beat Pakistan in the finals. But unfortunately, the Indian team is the only one which is not affiliated to its country’s national board. Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met the team and spoke about the team on his show, Mann Ki Baat, not much has changed and they are still struggling for support. The Indian blind cricket team was formed in 1998. Currently, the team is managed by the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI). It is associated with World Blind Council, and is the apex body governing blind cricket in the country. Around 25 states are associated with CABI and it is the only authorizing body to get other teams to play blind cricket. Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) is an independent entity - backed by Samarthanam Trust, a non-profit trust. They are in dire need of funds. The situation of the team members is pathetic. They are struggling financially, staying in hinterlands of Indian villages. Some live hand to mouth, doing odd jobs. Take for instance 29-year-old Ketan Patel, who is a partially blind cricketer, and has been playing for 12 years now. He won the Man-of-the-Series award for India's blind cricket team in the recently concluded ODI and T20 series in England, but is languishing without a job and any potential career growth. Despite many requests to the Gujarat government, Patel has been unsuccessful in finding much needed employment. Despite earning “enough” by rice farming and milk selling, Patel is struggling to make ends meet. Patel, who debuted in 2004 at the National Blind Championships in Chennai, is still hopeful. Despite their struggles, the team has been formidable and its performance exemplary. In December 2012, India won the first T20 world cup in Bangalore and in 2014, they won the ODI World Cup in Cape Town. It is the only blind team in the world that has won the T20, ODI and Asian championship. No other team has won all three championships. The team believes that donations and awareness will make a huge difference. With better equipment, they can perform better. And with some help from the government, they can get jobs and a life of dignity. BCCI is yet to recognize blind cricket and this is one of the team’s major demands as well, but it is not expected to happen anytime soon. In the last few years, the CABI supported by the Samarthanam Trust has always ensured that the Indian blind cricket team gets all the help it can get to compete at the international level but currently their funds have dried up. In the past, most of the cricketers have paid for the expenses out of their own pockets. Currently, their focus is on the upcoming T20 Blind World Cup in November and December this year, for which they are raising funds in partnership with Milaap, the fundraising portal. They are looking to raise a total of Rs 50 lakh which will help to pay for their kits, coaches and other expenses. If our readers wish to donate or support the team, here is the link.
It is an illegal way of gaining access to a site, creating a web page on it and inject it with lots of keywords and links pointing to the black hat SEO practitioner’s commercial page. They set up a parasite hosting to take advantage of the authoritative domains from Google. This way they would receive traffic for their site and money from those who want to buy. Usually, this happens without the knowledge or consent of the person who owns the authoritative domain.
It is what its name suggests. It’s somewhere in the middle of white and black and if used by a professional, can still be effective. However, it’s safe to say that taking a grey hat approach is playing with fire if you’re not 100% sure of what you’re doing and since we’re predominantly content-led now, it’s not something I would recommend.
As the name says it, negative SEO does the opposite of what you would expect and that is to cut traffic and decrease SEO visibility continuously. But who wants that? I would that say a lot of people since we talk about it. They don’t want to do it for their own site, but rather false reporting their competitors to get them penalized. Gary Illyes, a webmaster trends analyst at Google, tweeted on his account saying that Google hasn’t seen a real example of negative SEO?
I know all these questions have been addressed in this or that article, like in my discussion with Ken Krogue in his Forbes piece or in the latest letter by Senator John D. Rockefeller to Matt Cutts about SERPs and moving companies. Yet why is there so much confusion about search engine optimization? In an attempt to clear things up, let’s take a basic look at SEO ethics with some terms and definitions.
Gray Content. If there are limitations to White Hat and stuffing with Black Hat, Gray Hat SEO works by working in between. Enough to be considered as White Hat but not enough to be considered as Black Hat. If you want this to work, you’ll need to work on high-quality content with keywords that sounds naturally in the content. You can also work on creating duplicate contents and posted on different sites.
Then add the site to google webmaster tools and use the 'change of address' tool to redirect linkjuice back to your website. This is not paying for links because there are no direct links that go back to your site which are paid for, so you are just paying for the link juice. The webmaster that you are paying will be aware that this is what you are doing and if they agree to it, it's not against the webmaster guidelines (yet).
Hi Razvan, I love the long-form posts your team has been publishing this year. And especially the work you did with Mike King and iPullRank a few months ago. This article, in particular, was a fun trip down memory lane. I played around with article spinning 5-6 years ago. It was fun to test the accuracy of various spinners – but it also gave me a headache. -Jay Reply
As the song says, a link farm is a collection of websites connected with each other, manipulating your link profile by increasing the number of inbound links. It has a negative impact since Google sees link farming as a spammy way of getting links. The content of a site that participates in a link farm looks just like every other site on the internet with an exception: it has text covered with irrelevant hyperlinks linking to random sites. The use of link farms was popular in the days when Google Page Rank mattered, but as time changed, Google also changed, and now this practice will get you penalized because the generated links are considered to be unnatural. Humans do not create the exchanged links for humans, but rather for search engines.
Usually, PBNs are created using expired domains. This is because they already have link juice and that can come in handy when you are trying to pass authority to another site that doesn’t have so much. Yet, this is not mandatory.
Remember, Google has a product, the information it serves and if that information is no good then Google has no value. Google wants better websites and gets them from SEO professionals.
Garrat, I think you missunderstood. I was referring to targeting keywords that are similar and should all point to one page. To use your example, having a separate page or “window tinting” and “window tint”. I was referring to a very specific example I’d seen where a national restaurant made a page for each and every zipcode and city, even if there wasn’t a restaurant in that location. Regarding your “I lol’ed” comment. I’m not sure if this was supposed to be condescending or not, but all the examples above were based on real scenarios. Cheers, -Peter Reply
If you do suck at black hat SEO, or just do it to make money and suck at it, well you’re a very, very special type of SEO. You, my friend, are an asshat SEO. Asshat SEOs aren’t SEOs at all, but they make money using our techniques while making the rest of us look bad.
Before you get caught, and God knows what will happen to you and your site, you must wonder “Is the black hat SEO worth it?”. Just do good and good will come to you.
Following the rise and eventual decline of the full disclosure vs. anti-sec "golden era"—and the subsequent growth of an "ethical hacking" philosophy—the term grey hat began to take on all sorts of diverse meanings. The prosecution in the U.S. of Dmitry Sklyarov for activities which were legal in his home country changed the attitudes of many security researchers. As the Internet became used for more critical functions, and concerns about terrorism grew, the term "white hat" started referring to corporate security experts who did not support full disclosure.
Hey Christy, While this post is old, I actually know several domain authority 70+ sites where all of these still work. However, they probably wouldn’t do much for a new or a lower authority site. -Peter Reply
Many website owners disagree about what is the best way to perfect their website’s SEO. It all comes down to a strategy decision that could affect your website’s longevity and reputation. Some people believe that in order to succeed, you need to apply grey or even black hat SEO tactics. However, white hat SEO optimizers have a different opinion. White hat SEO tactics are always going to give you the most long term effects, and plenty of studies have shown that.
The possibility of your site being banned from Google is lesser compared with Black Hat SEO. However, the risk is still there and may result to a penalty. Techniques are questionable but nonetheless effective if with proper execution and of course, keeping up-to-date with Google’s guidelines.
- General rule of thumb. Avoid the mainstream. I have always believed that “everything popular is wrong” in SEO, even in grey hat seo (some call it “gray hat seo”). If you see a busy niche or keyword, avoid it. There are so many easy wins still in the SEO world that it’s not worth your effort to try and get some of the big nasty hard keywords unless you really have your skills down.
This should also be avoided, there are thousands of sites that claim to provide genuine likes for a few dollars, but this is rarely a good idea. Much of the time, the likes are not genuine, but gleaned from lapsed accounts that aren’t used anymore.
Duplicate content is a type of content that appears on more than one site. Also, duplicate content might be content stolen from other places (URLs). It is only giving a hard time to search engines to choose from all the duplicate content, and show the correct piece of information – which usually happens, and Google is showing the original content in SERPs. That because it can’t show duplicate content – it’s not relevant to the user. Oh, the good old days of SEO when duplicate content wouldn’t damage your site so bad! Nowadays, using this technique will hamper your ranking in a blink of an eye. Besides that, you might put your site at high risk of getting penalized by Google Panda. A safe way that is not considered duplicate content is using citation for the information you gather from external sources.
Whenever you put a comment on any blog, always make an excuse to link back to yourself. While you're at it, get into the habit of being very helpful. Join forums where you can post solutions to other people’s problems. Moneysavingexpert.com is a great one as it gets lots of traffic and has a plethora of relevant topics.
Microsites are no secret. They have been abused in every way imaginable. However, I will say that the most benefit I’ve seen gained from them is splitting them up by niche for local services. For example, a law firm having one site for their divorce services and then another for personal injury. This allows you to focus on specific areas for each site.
Never-the-less, I encourage you to write headlines, but take in mind that you should always have only one H1, and H2, H3, etc. just when it’s necessary.
Nice work on the post Peter. In your point about not putting keyword pages in the nav, if, for example, you were working on a Phoenix lawyer website would you recommend pages such as “Glendale Lawyer” targeting each of the individual communities around the larger city but don’t put the links to these pages in the nav? Thanks. Reply
This is a really sneaky one- eg if you are trying to promote power tools, call it a 'power tools review website'. Then add all your competitors to the directory. Add some content over the next few weeks, then after a few weeks, change the website to say that all links on the site require a $199 inclusion fee, and then report all the competitor sites on the directory as paying for links. – this is an example of negative SEO which is difficult to ban you for
4. Reviews, review, reviews. We saw a small movement last year as more and more companies started to realize the value of reviews -- but this year, it might be even bigger. You need to set out a whole new strategy to earn reviews -- by becoming involved with Yelp, using review extensions or even giving someone a new primary responsibility in your department.
There have been a lot of scare stories relating to guest posting and if this constitutes buying links, but if no cash is exchanged, then this is irrelevant. However, links can be exchanged for sponsorship of events (for example) and this is OK too.
This goes both ways. If you are a victim of this act, you can find software to help you discover who is stealing content from you and complaint against the site that has stolen your content. I’m not giving you ideas, just helping you make a difference between what’s wrong and what’s right and get away from the temptations and the bad guys. And I’m not talking about Google, he’s the good guy. Well, he is good as long as you’ve done nothing to upset him.

While the new law formed a part of the widely accepted Post-war consensus agreed to in general by the major parties, one part did generate controversy in the post-war years. Critics on the left attacked grammar schools as elitist because a student had to pass a test at age 11 to get in. Defenders argued that grammar schools allow pupils to obtain a good education through merit rather than through family income. No changes were made. In some areas, notably that of the London County Council, comprehensive schools had been introduced. They had no entrance test and were open to all children living in the school catchment area. However, despite tentative support for 'multilateralism' in secondaries, and a desire to raise the standard of secondary moderns to that of private institutions, from Minister for Education Ellen Wilkinson, the majority of Labour MPs were more concerned with implementing the 1944 Act; her successor George Tomlinson saw this through, although the secondary technicals remained underdeveloped.
In the second year, you have more choice and ownership over your studies, as you pick two Education modules. In general, modules examine topics in more depth and detail, and again, often come from certain perspectives. For example Constructions of Childhood uses a sociological and cultural position, to analyse what it means to be a child in the world; in addition, it asks what childhood means to the world. Whereas Learning in the Early Years examines children, but from a child developmental psychological perspective. Hence, you can pick which ontological position you prefer, or mix and match these contrasting views. There is also a chance to study Harry Potter, which may interest some muggles!
If you are looking for the records of a particular state-funded school you should, in the first instance, contact the nearest local archive. Use the Find an archive tool to find contact details for county and other local archives.
There were disputes about the movement in the early years. The schools were derisively called "Raikes' Ragged School". Critics thought the schools would weaken home-based religious education, that it might be a desecration of the Sabbath (generally to be used as a day of rest), and that Christians should not be employed on the Sabbath. "Sabbatarian disputes" in the 1790s led many Sunday schools to cease their teaching of writing.
This class will explore the plantations that took place in Ulster during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Students will examine the emergence of the idea for plantation in Ireland, why Ulster was regarded as suitable for plantation, and the various endeavours by English and Scots to settle in the north of Ireland, whether by private enterprise or by the state. This will culminate in the official Plantation of Ulster, a 'British' project initiated by James VI and I in the early years of his reign as king of England, Ireland and Scotland. Students will also look at a couple of cases studies of individuals who were involved in plantation, enabling a detailed study of the political, social, economic and confessional reasons why they chose to migrate to and settle in Ireland at this time.
The history of education in England can be documented to the Anglo-Saxons' settlement of England. During the Middle Ages, schools were established to teach Latin grammar to the sons of the aristocracy, as part of preparation also for the entry of some into the clergy and religious orders. The church preserved literacy and learning during this period, and education was closely tied to the religious vocation, in order to read the Bible and related documents. Apprenticeship was the main way for youths to enter practical occupations. Two universities were established in affiliation with the church: the University of Oxford, followed by the University of Cambridge, both related closely to training for clergy. A reformed system of "free grammar schools" was established in the reign of Edward VI.
Until the age of fourteen, the education of children was in the hands of their parents, but supervised by the authorities of their calpōlli. Part of this education involved learning a collection of sayings, called huēhuetlàtolli ("sayings of the old"), that embodied the Aztecs' ideals. Judged by their language, most of the huēhuetlàtolli seemed to have evolved over several centuries, predating the Aztecs and most likely adopted from other Nahua cultures.
This module is designed to help students develop a critical approach to the theorisation of Education as a field of undergraduate study. It is intended that the phasing of this module will follow the completion of semester 1 course work and assignment feedback; thus offering formative advice and strategies for improving their reading, writing and theorisation of Educational issues. The module aims to help students make the familiar unfamiliar through further reflection on: their own educational experiences, their reading of key educational texts, and their approach to articulating ideas about education in written and oral form. The module then aims to support students through the anxiety-provoking experience of ‘troublesome knowledge’ while encouraging them to explore and question contested educational ideas.

The modules listed on our website may occasionally be subject to change. Where a module is no longer available, we will let you know as soon as we can and help you make other choices.

Following the Act of Uniformity in 1662, religious dissenters set up academies to educate students of dissenting families, who did not wish to subscribe to the articles of the established Church of England. Some of these 'dissenting academies' still survive, the oldest being Bristol Baptist College. Several Oxford colleges (Harris Manchester, Mansfield, and Regent's Park) are also descendents of this movement.
Education in French controlled West Africa during the late 1800s and early 1900s was different from the nationally uniform compulsory education of France in the 1880s. "Adapted education" was organized in 1903 and used the French curriculum as a basis, replacing information relevant to France with "comparable information drawn from the African context." For example, French lessons of morality were coupled with many references to African history and local folklore. The French language was also taught as an integral part of adapted education.

What do you remember about your schooldays? Were they happy ones, or are you old enough to remember getting the belt? Youngsters today seem to have a much more relaxed attitude to school and cannot imagine the strictness and discipline that used to prevail. We at the History of Education Centre are happy to instruct them! A visit to the schoolroom is a rare opportunity for visitors to experience what school was like over one hundred years ago: with our regimented rows of wooden desks, the blackboard and the abacus, the tawse and the finger stocks, the slate pencils and the split nib pens, visitors can get a real feel for education as it was during the Victorian or WWI eras. The classroom is a time-warp stocked with genuine school items that have served generations of children and lessons are provided by a regiment of strict, stern-faced, role-play teachers. Similarly, our museum room is laid out with displays of household items, many of which visitors can handle or use. What happened before electricity, televisions or computers, washing machines, fridges or power showers? What did children do at home? Sit round our original old kitchen range, which originated in a domestic science classroom of a local school, and listen to our volunteers describe what families ate all those years ago. Do you know what to do with cold porridge, or how to make sheep's heid broth, or why the baking tray is half-empty? We welcome visits from schools, clubs and other groups to the History of Education Centre. We can also lend selected items from our Collection, and are engaged in a number of other Projects, such as Doors Open Day. The major in Ancient History allows students to study a wide range of modules covering not only fascinating figures like Alexander the Great, but also basic aspects of everyday life, such as ancient myths, politics, warfare (both on land and at sea) and the economic and trading networks of Ancient Greece. Students can explore broader questions about how Rome grew into an empire, how Sparta became the legend that it is today and how religion shaped everyday life two thousand years ago. In the first year of study, modules can be taken on a wide range of periods and themes; in the second and third years, the School offers specialised modules on all aspects of Greco-Roman history so that you can gain in-depth knowledge in areas of particular interest to you. Options are also available to study select modules in ancient Chinese History, Classical Archaeology or Theology. The culmination of the degree is the dissertation, where you are free to pursue a topic of your choice in line with the research interests of your tutor. The Education Studies component of this major/minor degree comprises two modules of study per year over the three years of your degree. Modules within the Education Studies part of the degree will cover a range of themes including, for example, the historical development of education, learning cultures and approaches to learning, the philosophy of learning and education, and the legal frameworks within which education operates today. In your first year of study, you will undertake modules that will enable you to explore key educational debates regarding the relations between learning, knowledge, and education in contemporary society; this will provide an overview of the associated aims and values which have underpinned education. During the second year of study you will undertake a 20-credits module entitled ‘Learning in an Inclusive Environment’. As part of this module, you will have the opportunity for gaining valuable work experience through a work placement. This placement may be in a classroom, museum or other contexts which respond to education in its broadest sense. The work will provide you with an insight into the application of concepts and ideas that surround education. Further it offers an opportunity to gain first-hand experience that will support your future career aspirations. In your second year you will also study a module that explores educational identities in relation to knowledge, power, culture and social relations. Finally, in your third year of study you will have the opportunity to either take a 40-credits dissertation that combines elements of your Education Studies with your chosen Humanities subject, or take a 20-credit Independent Project plus a 20-credit Practical Placement. The latter module might involve an observation in a local school, college, organisation or learning/teaching contexts within the community. There is clear emphasis on enhancing your employability through ensuring that the modules enable you to develop a range of transferable skills for the workplace. Indeed, you will have the opportunity to develop such skills via, for example, a compulsory work placement, seminar presentations and a practice-based, work related dissertation. The School is proud of the wide range of assessment methods used on the course, such as essays, presentations, wikis, web pages and reflective reports, so that the assessment reflects the student’s performance as a whole. http://www.tipz9ja.ml This class explores the role that health and medicine has played in the major wars of the twentieth century. In particular, it considers the vital contribution that medicine has made to manpower economy, discipline and morale.
Further Information Within the History modules you will cover a wide range of material, which will provide you with useful historical topics that are part of the school curriculum at both GCSE and A Level. In addition, you may also wish to undertake modules with a more practical focus such as the Community History Project. The course has strong elements of local, national and international history. Students can take the Community History Project, which involves them working to a project brief devised by a real client, undertaking relevant research and feeding back their findings through a display, exhibition, teaching pack, archive guide or town trail. All final year students will undertake a dissertation in either Education or History.
The course has a practical focus on career development and employs a number of teaching and learning methods to help you display a broad knowledge over two disciplines. It is delivered through lectures, seminars, individual tuition and individual and small group research projects.
Typical offer grades are for guidance only, and will depend on the subjects you are combining. Please read the entries for both subjects. Where there is a disparity between the typical offer for Subject A and the typical offer for Subject B, the higher offer should be taken as the usual offer for the combination of the two.
